Utility Supplies in a Privately Used Holiday Home
Last updated on 18 November 2011

Utilities are defined as the gas supply, electricity supply and water supply. In some remote areas which are not connected to the mains, an oil tank may be employed, typically sunk in the garden to provide heating throughout the house.

The choice of suppliers is influenced by usage of the property by yourself, and possibly friends and family. If the property is used mainly in the summer, as is popular, heating bills may be greatly reduced, so consideration can be given to how energy bills are paid, where monthly direct debits may not reflect the usage. Also having a water meter installed could lead to lower running costs versus standard annual charges.

Other costs include a permanent telephone line in, TV licence, wi-fi and TV subscriptions. How often will the property be used and each supply must be considered on it’s own merit; for example the need to have a landline and broadband at the property or are Internet enabled mobile phones sufficient for your needs. How strong is the mobile phone reception at the property?
